TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi reminded political parties not to play on identity politics during next year’s elections. He asked all parties and legislative candidates as well as presidential candidates to focus on campaigning their ideas and plans instead.
“I have always said, don’t use identity politics. Now is no longer an era for clashing identities, but a time to contest ideas, programs, and projects,” the President said in his address during the national coordination meeting of the Crescent Moon Party (PBB) in North Jakarta, Wednesday, January 11.
Jokowi mentioned how the world is currently shrouded with uncertainties stemming from threats of recession. If Indonesia’s political conditions heat up and shake the economic stability, Jokowi fears it will be difficult to return conditions to normal.
“Again, let’s win together. Thus, we must win intelligently, win politely, and if you want to win, win in friendly ways,” Jokowi said.
Jokowi Supports Yusril
On the same occasion, Jokowi expressed his support for Yusril Ihza Mahendra if the latter wishes to run for president or vice president in next year’s elections. According to Jokowi, Yusril is a politician with long and qualified experience.
Jokowi said that when he ran for mayor in Solo, one of the parties that backed his campaign was the PBB. During the 2019 presidential elections, PBB also supported Jokowi.
“So if I want to give my support in return, it should be fine,” the president said.
