Social protection and security are among what is regulated in PPRT Bill, both health and employment social security
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah stated that the Domestic Workers’ Protection (PPRT) Bill regulates social security issues, both regarding health and employment.
“Social protection and security are among what is regulated in PPRT Bill, both health and employment social security,” the minister stated at a press conference held at the Presidential Palace here on Wednesday.
Fauziyah explained that the bill had, in fact, been initiated by the House of Representatives (DPR) for a long time as law since the 2004-2009 period until it then finally became a priority for the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) in 2019-2024.
The minister noted that so far, the legal basis for domestic workers is regulated in Manpower Minister’s Regulation Number 2 of 2015 on the Protection of Domestic Workers.
However, the regulation has not specifically regulated social security provided by employers to domestic workers.
“We see that a higher regulation above the Manpower Minister’s Regulation is needed, and it is time for this Manpower Minister’s Regulation to be made higher into law,” the minister remarked.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has instructed the law and human rights minister and manpower minister to immediately coordinate and consult with the DPR, so that the PPRT Bill can be passed into law at the earliest and be able to offer protection to domestic workers, employers, and work distributors.
The president accentuated the government’s commitment to providing protection to an estimated four million domestic workers in Indonesia.
He assessed that domestic workers are at risk of losing their rights as employees if there is no legal basis that specifically regulates them.
“It has been more than 19 years that the Domestic Workers’ Protection Bill (was initiated). The PPRT Bill has not been ratified yet,” Jokowi stated.
