25 January 2023 22:24 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesia is currently combatting the high number of stunting among children – which is the impaired growth and development that children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation.

Children are defined as stunted if their height-for-age is more than two standard deviations below the WHO Child Growth Standards median.

As of December 2022, Health Deputy Minister Dante Saksono Harburowo said in the ‘national stunting forum’ that 12 provinces need to be focused on handling this condition. There are seven provinces in the country that continue to log a high number of stunting. The following are 5 provinces with the highest prevalence of stunting case:

  1. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) with 37.8 percent.
  2. West Sumatra 33.8 percent.
  3. Aceh 33.2 percent.
  4. West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) 31.4 percent.
  5. Southeast Sulawesi 30.2 percent.
  6. South Kalimantan 30 percent.
  7. West Sulawesi 29.8 percent.

Five provinces logging the most number of stunting:

  1. West Java with 971.792 cases.
  2. East Java with 651.708 cases.
  3. Central Java with 508.618 cases.
